A 26-year-old Elkhart woman is facing felony charges following a single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on State Road 19 in Elkhart County that sent both her and a young child to the hospital.

According to police, the crash happened around 2:38 p.m. on Dec. 21 on State Road 19, south of Sturdy Oaks Drive. Investigators say the driver, Kyler K. Jacobs, was traveling southbound in a 2012 Chrysler 200 when she lost control of the vehicle, drove off the west side of the roadway, and struck an AEP utility pole. The car then continued southwest and crashed head-on into a tree.

The vehicle sustained total front-end damage, and airbags deployed.

Jacobs was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said. She was transported to Elkhart General Hospital with abdominal bleeding and complaints of head and neck pain. She was later cited for felony operating while intoxicated and failure to wear a seatbelt.

A 3-year-old male passenger, who was properly restrained, was also taken to Elkhart General Hospital with a complaint of leg pain.
