A bicyclist was injured following a collision with a school bus west of Middlebury, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened around 4:40 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9 in the 57,300 block of County Road 31, west of Middlebury.
Investigators say a bicycle traveling south on County Road 31 crossed left of center and sideswiped a northbound school bus. The impact caused damage to the bicycle’s front wheel and handlebars, as well as minor damage to the bus’s rear driver-side wheel well.
The bicyclist, identified as 31-year-old Richard Lambright of Goshen, suffered a laceration to his upper lip. He declined treatment at the scene and was later taken by a friend to a local hospital.
Deputies reported the bicyclist showed signs of impairment, and alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor. Charges are expected to be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for public intoxication and left-of-center violations.
The bus driver, a 52-year-old Goshen woman, was not injured. Three passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash, and none were hurt.
The incident remains under investigation.
