Residents packed a Roseland town meeting Thursday night to voice concerns about alleged corruption within town government and to call for the removal of Town Council President Mike Schalk.
Several residents accused town leaders of lacking transparency and requested a vote of no confidence in council leadership. Business owners and community members questioned decisions they say have affected local residents and businesses without enough public communication.
Concerns over town finances have also grown after officials announced there is not enough money in the budget to hold this year’s Police Night Out event. Residents additionally questioned snow removal expenses, which are reportedly nearing $70,000 despite the town also hiring outside contractors for assistance.
The criticism follows an ongoing state investigation into Roseland’s finances and missing checks after an audit raised concerns about spending by the former clerk-treasurer earlier this year.
Schalk denied all allegations against him and the town council, saying the town is working to be financially responsible with taxpayer money. Despite calls for his resignation, Schalk said he plans to complete the remaining four years of his term as council president.
