More information has been released about a lockdown that affected four Penn-Harris-Madison schools on Monday, Oct. 2.

Bittersweet, Schmucker, Penn, and Pennway schools were placed on an external lockdown at about 8:15 a.m. Monday. A bus for Elsie Rogers Elementary was also affected.

School officials told parents in a letter sent home with students that a Schmucker student went missing over the weekend, along with two weapons in the student’s home. The students were kept safe as police searched the schools and buses for the student, who eventually was found as he was dropped off from another vehicle.

The student was searched and no weapons were found on the child. One weapon was found at a home while another was found in a middle school student’s backpack.

No threats were ever made to students. St. Joseph County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek held a press conference Tuesday afternoon and stated that two students were arrested, but one of them went to John Young Middle School.
