A piece of military history flew into Elkhart this past weekend.
On Saturday, the Yankee Air Museum out of Belleville, Michigan flew a B-25D bomber into Elkhart. Part of the reason was to give rides to anyone who wanted to ride the rare plane. It also flew over the wedding of a granddaughter of a crew member of that very plane.
“We are here for a wedding that took place this weekend,” crew member Jerry Lester told ABC 57. “It’s for the granddaughter of the original crew chief of this plane, when it served its missions in Corsica in April-May 1944.”
The plane’s pilot, Jerry Nichols, told ABC 57 that, despite her age, she’s still a good machine.
“It was designed back in 1939 and it flies very well. Just a great airplane. There’s very few of these airplanes left, so it is a privilege to be able to fly the airplane.”
Nichols says there’s only about 25 of these B-25D bombers that are still able to fly.
