New mixed-use development planned for land at Douglas/S.R. 933 intersection

A local developer wants to pump some life into the northeast corner of State Road 933 and Douglas Road.

Notre Dame and South Bend-based Holladay Properties have reached a tentative agreement for a $65 million to $75 million mixed-use development. The 25-acre site, which includes the current University Village, would feature offices, retail shops, townhouses, and apartments.

However, the South Bend Tribune reports there’s a small catch. The property can only go forward if it’s tied in to a project to improve safety and landscaping along S.R. 933 between Douglas Road and Angela Boulevard. A Holladay Properties official admits that stretch is “not safe for pedestrians or bikers.”

Holladay Properties owns a number of properties in that area, including the Inn at Saint Mary’s, Hilton Garden Inn, and Gillespie Conference Center…all located on land owned by the Sisters of Holy Cross.
