Niles is pausing medical marijuana applications for six months

Niles is putting a hold on new medical marijuana businesses for six months.

The city council this week approved the moratorium. City Administrator Ric Huff told the South Bend Tribune that he’s concerned over where the state is going with recreational marijuana and its potential effect on a medical marijuana industry that is still trying to get its legs underneath it in Michigan.

In the weeks leading up to the moratorium, city staff would often field five to 20 phone calls every week from potential medical marijuana businesses.

The moratorium lasts until after the November 6th election, when the recreational marijuana issue would be voted on.
