Fifth Michigan resident dies of mosquito-borne illness

A fifth Michigan resident has died of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or EEE.

A Cass County man has died from the mosquito-borne virus, which marks the tenth human case in the state. The man’s identity has not yet been released.

Other Michigan cases have been detected in Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties.

The first EEE-related death in Indiana took place in Elkhart County this week.

State health officials are warning residents to protect themselves against mosquitoes until the first hard freeze, when the insects will die off.

MNC spoke with ABC 57 Meteorologist Emily Kennedy on when to expect temperatures to drop.

“You need it to be a little closer to about 32 degrees or below to have freezing temperatures to help knock out the mosquito concern,” said Kennedy.

She also said although we don’t have a forecast of 32 degrees or below just yet, we have predictions for 36 degrees, which will still help limit mosquito activity.

“They do not like the cold,” Kennedy said.
