An Indiana House committee has rejected a Democratic proposal to direct $291 million in unexpected state tax revenue toward one-time teacher pay bonuses.
The Republican-controlled House Ways and Means Committee voted 13-7 along party lines against the proposal, going along with GOP Gov. Eric Holcomb’s request that the revenue go toward paying cash rather than borrowing money for several planned college campus construction projects.
Democrats argued that with current low interest rates the money would be better spent on addressing the state’s lagging teacher pay.

Annnnnnd people wonder why Indiana has a teacher shortage.
BRAVO. I’m glad it has been defeated.
Why are you glad a state with a teacher shortage due to low pay has voted against a salary increase when money is available to use for that purpose?
Teacher strike coming on.
I suppose now they’ll take more days off and close schools to go back down to protest for more money at the State House.
They already get more than half the states budget…and make more than the median income in their counties while turning out students that are more indoctrinated than educated.
When they start concentrating on the Reading, Writing and Arithmetic that will get them good scores on their ACT/SAT tests and stop turning their classes over to electronic toys maybe we can talk.
Also, there’s a reason IN has a AAA rating fiscally…and it’s not just throwing money around.
