Local farmers are bracing for a pricey planting season as diesel costs surge due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

Rising fuel and fertilizer costs are putting pressure on farm operations. Large equipment can require anywhere from 120 to 250 gallons of diesel per fill-up, making fuel a major expense.

According to AAA, the national average for diesel has climbed to 5.64 a gallon. Some farmers say they prepared by stocking up early, but warn prolonged high prices could cut into profits.

WSBT says if the trend continues, the financial strain could extend into the fall harvest season.
