Teachers and staff in Mishawaka schools will get more training on how to calm students during tense or emotional situations after the school board approved a new crisis prevention program.

The training focuses on communication, body language, and de-escalation techniques, especially when working with special needs students.

Superintendent Dr. Theodore Stevens says he has used the training himself while working as a principal and still relies on those techniques.

The district will continue the program with former Mishawaka administrator Mike Fisher, who recently retired but is staying on to train staff.
