Michigan agriculture officials are asking residents to watch for the invasive spotted lanternfly this summer.

The pest isn’t harmful to people or animals, but it can damage plants and become a nuisance outdoors.

Populations have been confirmed in several southeastern Michigan counties, including Jackson County. Residents are encouraged to learn how to identify the insect, inspect outdoor gear and vehicles, and report sightings outside known infestation areas.

Officials say early detection and reporting are key to slowing the spread of the invasive species statewide.
