One of the best annual meteor showers for North America peaks this weekend — and experts say it’ll be a phenomenal show.

“This year, instead of seeing about 80 Perseids per hour, the rate could top 150 and even approach 200 meteors per hour,” NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke told Space.com.

Cooke is referring to the Perseid meteor shower, an annual event from mid-July to mid-August. This year, the show continues until Aug. 24. It will peak Friday, Aug. 12.

The meteors will appear to be coming from the constellation Perseus and shoot across the northeast part of the sky. Michiana residents may be able to see up to three meteors per minute.

The best time to watch the show will be in the very early morning hours Friday after the moon sets. Head to a dark area away from city lights and look to the northeast sky. Space.com suggests giving your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness (so make sure you have a cozy place sit sit and plenty of bug spray and snacks).

If being awake between midnight and 4 a.m. Friday isn’t possible, Michiana residents can watch the meteor shower over the weekend. The meteor shower will be harder to see closer to the full moon Aug. 18.

Find out why the Perseid meteor shower will be so spectacular this year in the story from Space.com.
